DRAFT K-9 Numeracy Toolkit

The Draft Numeracy Toolkit

The DRAFT K-9 Numeracy Toolkit is a synthesis of the previously developed K-2 Early Numeracy Profile and the

Gr. 3-9 Numeracy Assesment Toolkit.

The K-9 Numeracy Assessment Toolkit was co-developed with educators in our district to support meaningful, responsive assessment aligned with the BC Curriculum. Built around key content areas and mathematical competencies, the toolkit is designed to help make student thinking visible, guide instructional decisions, and promote deep learning across the year.

The SD23 K–9 Numeracy Toolkit includes:

  • A foundational resource on Co-creating the Conditions for Powerful Math Learning, helping educators and students build a shared foundation for meaningful mathematics learning.

  • K–9 Numeracy Maps, outlining key concepts, what proficiency looks like, and how mathematical understanding develops.

  • Engaging activities and rich, low-floor, high-ceiling tasks that integrate curricular content and competencies.

  • Thinking routines that help students make sense of mathematics, communicate their thinking, and build on the ideas of others.

  • Editable assessment placemats for gathering evidence after students have had opportunities to explore and practice.

  • Student reflection tools that support self-assessment, goal setting, and learner agency.

  • Rubrics and trackers for organizing evidence, identifying patterns, and planning responsive next steps.

These tools help teachers look at what learners say, do, and show to better understand their learning and plan next steps. They enhance, rather than replace, teachers' professional expertise.
